The org chart is dead
The org chart is dead. And I’ll prove it to you with an example about how AI works.
What AI needs to create value
To get real value from AI, three things have to be known:
- The persona, or ID — so the AI knows when to act.
- The context — how the AI should execute the work.
- The references — examples of “good” work, or successful execution.
Structure your data in those three layers and AI doesn’t just execute your work efficiently. It upgrades itself in real time, improving on what good looks like faster than any human can.
Now look at how an org chart is built
An org chart runs on the same first two layers:
- Roles and titles tell people when to act, and on what.
- Job descriptions give the context for each title’s responsibilities.
But here’s where it breaks. Unlike AI, an org chart is built on each person carrying their own reference for what good looks like. It’s career experience that lets someone work their way up the chart.
That’s the org chart’s fundamental weakness. It’s designed around people — and people self-upgrade at their own pace.
The Company Model era
Now we have AI that can upgrade exponentially quicker. So in the old structure, the human becomes a blocker in the company’s own org chart.
We’ve entered the Company Model era — where humans direct the potential of the model but don’t block the upgrade cycle. And this era is going to be hugely uncomfortable for people who value their title over winning the title as an org.
Business is now fundamentally a team sport. It always has been for the best teams in every market — only now, just like in sport, there’s no hiding on the playing field. Or in the org chart.
Your value to the market will either be obvious, or it’ll be superseded by a Company Model that one-ups your old game.
Camaraderie and clarity always win
In any game with undeniable rules — where humans can augment their potential with technology — camaraderie and clarity win. That’s how you build winning teams in sport, and it’s how you now have to think about your Company Model.
The org chart is dead. It’s time to own your game.
